It’s a wonderful time in Nepal with a wonderful government and wonderful political parties. Although all political parties in Nepal are champion on making false promises, the CPN-Maoist has overrun all others in demonstrating wonders. Maoist leaders are good at maneuvering rumor and keeping commoners under illusion.
With the formation of a coalition government under their leadership, Maoist leaders are facing enormous challenges. They are freezing due to the hard reality of delivering their past pledges. The pledges are on and the challenges are mounting. With the government’s honeymoon period over, Nepalese are rewarded with more load-shedding, spine-chilling insecurity and chaotic political situation. Maoist Chairman and Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal vented his helplessness last week. He challenged that his party will quit the government and he will be compelled to take up arms to bring about peace and security in the country. Isn’t it ridiculous statement by the head of the executive who is supposed to maintain law and order situation in the country? A healthy tips to the Maoists–Be honest and acknowledge that you can’t deliver all the promises and be frank enough to tell the public that you made many promises which simply can’t be fulfilled. We expect the Maoist leaders to police their YCL across the country.
As public frustration was mounting against the government, it is coming up with various tactics to show it to the public that it is really working. Recently, the government held negotiation with an armed outfit of Tarai known as Virus Killers. Negotiation as such is not bad but the government should be smart enough to choose groups for negotiation. I wonder how many Virus Killers militants will be integrated in National Army, as being one of their major demands.
In the last couple of weeks, I was taken aback by yet another false promise made by Maoist Chairman and Prime Minister Dahal. He said his cadres will return property, confiscated during the decade-long conflict, to the people by mid-December. He went on to say that the government will provide compensation to the people who don’t receive their property back from the Maoist cadres. Mind it…Dahal’s deadline is already over. But no one has yet received their property back from the Maoists. Dahal’s remarks are ethically, morally and principally wrong. I strongly feel that the local cadres are, in fact, ready to quit the Maoist party rather than return the looted property. The next remark by Maoist Chairman and Prime Minister Dahal that the government will provide compensation to the people if they don’t receive their property back from Maoist cadres by mid-December, indicates the Maoists are not ready to return the confiscated property and are instead planning to extort the national coffers in the name of compensating for the crimes their party carried out in the past. It happens nowhere in the world that the government compensates for the crime what a particular political party commits. Maoists have no right to misuse the state coffers. No excuses… their party must compensate the victims.
I was more surprised by the silence maintained by other coalition partners including CPN-UML and the Madhesi Peoples Rights Forum (MPRF). Why didn’t the UML and the MPRF protest against Prime Minister Dahal’s such remarks including his threat to quit government and take arms? Are they scared to lose their position in the government? It seems that the UML and the MPRF are happy to remain in the government and have no responsibility for people. For heaven’s sake, UML and MPRF guys, wake up and protest against the unjustified remarks and activities of the Maoists.
